I stumbled across the work of DONK while wondering around the streets of Shoreditch, typically lost, after just stumbling out of some shady back street Gin bar (standard, Shoreditch art trip behaviour!)..I took a wrong turn and ended up at the bottom of Toynbee Street confronted with the most amazing paste up wall. My love for DONK was born and I needed to learn more...
On the train home I looked this fella up, real name Tom Dunkley, he grew up around the East End area and has been a true Londoner all his life. His work can be found around Toynbee, Fashion, Hanbury & Grimsby Streets. A photographer by day DONK chooses to walk a different path with his street art, creating images not only from his imagination but based around his super cool son. His street posters remain iconic, albeit with rips or doodles, yet this is fine, slowly blending in to the walls and becoming part of the fabric of the street. Many of the images contain splashes of colour, you could be mistaken for them being vandalised, but this is all part of it... DONKS unique, unmistakable style.
B.Brave & Homeboy ~ Original paste ups - Bricklane
I wanted to met this artist, I wanted to tell him all about Chapter XIII, I wanted his work in my gallery. A week later I found myself standing outside a London gallery where DONK was exhibiting his latest works, chatting & sharing a cigarette with the most laid back, chilled out guy. I wasted no time in boring him to death and asking him if he would like some space in my gallery. When he invited me up to collect some pieces a few weeks later we met in a pub (Shocking!) and he talked openly too me about his life and what inspires him to carry on producing such beholding pieces, each with its own story. A few weeks later Donk and his son casually rocked up to my last Paint Jamm, and I felt extremely honored to be able to show him the pieces beautifully framed on the big wall in my gallery. The urban art world is littered with the most amazing, hard working, down to earth artists just doing their thing, their way and DONK is no exception. I feel truly humbled to have met such a talented artist and be able to display his work in my gallery.
I have a signed B.Brave in my personal collection, I brought it when I was signing the paperwork for ChapterXIII. I still look to it when I am having a doubtful day. It reminds me of all I have achieved and everything I am yet to achieve... Art can kinda do that... B.BRAVE.
Drop by the gallery and check out the collection for yourself, all the pieces below I have for sale both framed & unframed.
