Daith Piercings for the relief of MIGRAINES

Living with migraines can be a complete nightmare. The severe headache usually appears as a throbbing pain at the front or side of the head and often causes feelings of nausea, vomiting and increased sensitivity to light or sound,But a growing number of migraine sufferers believe they may have found an unusual way to ease symptoms: daith piercings.

A daith piercing is a piercing in the innermost cartilage fold of the ear. Advocates say it works in the same way as acupuncture, targeting pressure points on the body's surface to ease discomfort. There is no medical evidence to support this procedure but professional piercers are seeing an increase in the trend with reports of migraine relief in a lot of cases, plus it looks pretty cool.. so its definitely worth a try!

Your piercer would have already given you detailed instructions on how to look after your piercings but here are some basic tips to keep your new piercing healthy during the healing process.

After having a piercing, it is important to keep the area clean and dry at all times.

With ear & surface piercings change your bed sheets and keep hair tied back.

Healing with most piercings will take at least 4 to 6 weeks, in some cases up to 3 months, you should not change your jewellery before this time.

Before cleaning your piercings ensure you wash your hands thoroughly!

At least twice a day clean your piercing with a fresh saline solution:

  • 2 Teaspoons of natural rock salt (available in any good supermarket) into a teacup
  • Fill teacup with boiling water straight  from the kettle
  • leave saline solution to cool too room temperature
  • clean with clean fresh kitchen roll NOT cotton wool

If it is possible, bath the piecing in the saline solution for a few minutes to loosen any discharge (eg, Nipples, Surface Piercings & Navels) . Alternatively, you can wet a clean cloth or gauze in the solution and apply it as a warm compress.

Avoid using strong cleaning solutions like TCP or Tea Tree oils, use mild soaps and shampoos to shower with and avoid taking baths until your piercing is healed. Don't pick or twist the jewllery, with ear piercings avoid dying your hair while your piercing is healing.
